Members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) on Thursday were prevented from taking out a protest march towards the state central library during a government function to celebrate the 49th year of statehood.
Armed with banners and placards, a group of 20 to 25 members of the HNYM took out a protest march from Jaiaw and on reaching IGP, about a few meters away from the venue of the official function, were stopped by magistrates and police.
Speaking to reporters, HNYM president Louis Dohtdong said that the decision of the protest march was to remind the chief minister Conrad K Sangma and his government on the need to resolve the long pending inter-state boundary dispute with Assam.
“What is the point of celebrating the statehood day, when the state till date does not have a proper boundary,” he said.
Dohtdong said despite 49 years of statehood, yet no government has come up with a permanent solution to end this boundary dispute, which has created a lot of hardship for the people residing in the border areas.
The HNYM leader further accused the state government of giving step-motherly treatment to the people residing in the border areas by not providing security.
Meanwhile, Dohtdong said that the organization has decided to intensify its agitation until the government resolves this problem.
