A student body in Manipur on Thursday demanded an enforcement of legislation to deal with people who embroil in unfair means in conducting examinations before the upcoming secondary school exams.
Addressing a press conference at the office of the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) in Imphal, leaders of the student bodies informed that Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recently directed the state government to frame laws to penalise wrongdoers in the exams.
DESAM secretary, L Lamyanba said that DESAM welcomed the directive of the MHRC while asserting that the student body has been pressing the state government to frame the laws.
While appealing the state government to initiate works for framing the laws at the earliest, the student body assured all possible cooperation and support while framing the law.
The secretary then demanded to complete the framing of the law at the earliest so that it can be enforced ahead of the upcoming secondary school exams to be conducted by Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BoSEM) and Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (CoHSEM).
The exams to be conducted by the two boards are scheduled to commence from May first week as the state government had already cleared the desk for conducting the exams.
Even as indulging in malpractice like leaking examination questions in conducting exams is a big crime, there is no special law or legislation which categorically deals with awarding penalty to individuals and officials involved in the commission of the crimes in the state.
Given earlier instances of question leak and other malpractices in the state, Manipur too needs such special law, he said.
