Ukhrul: A migratory bird, which was rescued on 7 November 2023 at Rayotang, was safely released on Friday at Vangayan Shirui village, Ukhrul.
Deputy Commisioner of Ukhrul, Kengoo Zuringla safely released the migratory bird in the presence of DFO of Ukhrul, Shanngam Shaliwo, Soyo Wungsek (Headman Shirui Aze), Yungrei Shangh (Headman Shirui Ato) and Shirui village leaders.

The migratory bird has been identified as Ashy-headed green pigeon (Treron phayrei), which is found mostly in Northeast India, Nepal and Bangladesh and also in southwest China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. It has been added to the Red List of IUCN in 2014. The Ashy-headed green pigeon usually occurs in single or in small groups. It eats the seeds and fruits of a wide variety of plants.

The migratory bird was rescued by Soring Shimrah (40 years) of Hunphun Village and handed over to Ukhrul Forest Division for safe release to its habitat.

DC of Ukhrul Kengoo Zuringla lauded the initiative and decision taken by Shirui Vilage Authority whereby the villagers have resolved to ban hunting and killing of wild animals and birds within their jurisdiction for 3 years from October 2023 to October 2026. As a sign of appreciation for active participation in conservation of wildlife, the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul presented a certificate of appreciation to the Shirui Village Authority.
DFO of Ukhrul, Shanngam Shaliwo expressed deep and immense appreciation to the Shirui Village Authority for their sincere efforts in conservation of wildlife. “The decision taken by Shirui Village Authority would be an example to other village in the District in following a footsteps closer towards conservation of wildlife” stated Shanngam Shaliwo.

Shirui Kashong range is a home to migratory birds originating from Siberia, China and other parts of the world. The migratory birds, locally known as “SHIRI” (grey-sided thrush) nestle and feeds on red berry fruits locally known as “SHIRUNGTHEI” is also found in the Shirui Kashong range. The migratory birds usually visit Shirui in the month of November and stay till January. Trapping of the migratory birds for food and large scale felling of Shirungthei fruit-bearing trees is posing a threat to the migratory bird. Taking into account of this danger, the Shirui Village Authority on 9 September 2023, during its half yearly assembly has taken a resolution to ban hunting and killing of wild animals and birds for 3 years.
