Imphal: Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh has said that the main reason for delay in holding Autonomous District Council (ADC) election is due to incomplete delimitation exercise for 10 ADCs. The number of ADCs was increased from 6 ADC TO 10 ADC by the (Sixth) Amendment Act, 2022.

Replying to a query raised by MLA K Meghachandra Singh on the third day of the 5th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Friday, House leader N Biren said the delimitation exercise for 10 ADCs is under process and on completion of the delimitation exercise, the schedule for holding the ADC election may be notified in consultation with the State Election Commission after obtaining due approval of the competent authority. Regarding the grant of funds to ADC, he said it is being recommended and reviewed by the State Finance Commission.

On the query raised by MLA K Meghachandra Singh regarding the pending election for Panchayat bodies, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Minister Y Khemchand replied in the House that the term of the last elected Panchayat bodies was completed in October, 2022 and that the matter regarding the schedule of the next Panchayat election is under process and the date will be fixed after obtaining fresh schedule from the State Election Commission and after obtaining due approval of the competent authority. He said, the financial positions of the Panchayat bodies are being reviewed by the State Finance Commission constituted from time to time by the State Department.
