Churachandpur Violence: 8 FIRs Registered, CBI Handling 2 Cases, Around 20 Perpetrators Identified

Imphal: Eight FIRs have been registered and 20 perpetrators have been identified so far in connection with the intense mob violence which took place in Churachandpur District Headquarter on February 15 night. Out of the eight FIRs, two cases have been handed over to the CBI for further investigation upon getting video evidence regarding involvement of armed militants in the incident. The same was disclosed by Chief Minister N Biren Singh who is also in charge of the Home Department in the house of 5th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on 3rd day of sitting on Friday.

N Biren Singh although refrained from divulging further into the details as the cases are still under investigation. The house leader was responding to calling attention motion raised by Congress MLA K. Meghachandra.

N Biren Singh also clarified that no land records were destroyed in the Churachandpur violence and also highlighted the state government’s initiative for digitisation of government documents and land records for all the places in the state. He said, 80 per cent of digitisation of documents have been completed so far.

It may be mentioned that a huge crowd of around 400 irate people tried to storm the office of Churachandpur District police at around 7:40 pm on February 15, hours after the suspension order of Head Constable, Siamlalpaul of Churachandpur District Police.

However, despite the attempt to repel the irate crowd in large number, the Mini Secretariat Churachandpur and District SP Offices were put on flames and damaged. Several government properties were reported to have been ransacked, several buses and trucks used by security forces were also set ablaze by the irate mob.

The suspension order came after a video went viral on social media showing the Head Constable, Siamlalpaul of Churachandpur District Police appearing in a video with armed group allegedly on February 14, 2024. The relevant authority considering the actions of the State force personnel’s “misconduct” suspended Siamlalpaul the following day.
