Thangal Union, the apex organization of the Thangal Naga tribe of Manipur, expressed its absolute displeasure and condemnation in the strongest terms possible, the expansion of Kuki protest rally into Thangal Naga areas of Kangpokpi on August 31 and physical manhandling of SDSA volunteers by rally participants, terming it completely unacceptable. “KSO Sadar Hills, despite several appeals not to take their agitation into Naga areas, approved the plan to traverse through the areas that are under the ancestral territorial jurisdiction of the Thangal Nagas,” it mentioned.

“It must be added that following the Saturday’s incident, fear, apprehension and anxiety has gripped among the Thangal Nagas living across the state. The Thangal Union calls for the cessation of all such activities in future that will jeopardize the peace and harmony in the area while urging the government to use every available emergency authority to prevent such escalation in the future,” added the Thangal Union press release.

Meanwhile, the Senapati District Women Association (SDWA) said it vociferously reviled the provoking and violent attitude of KSO-SH peace rally where the participants shouted “We demand Kukiland. This is Kukiland” within the Naga land is uncalled for. Each time the Kuki peace rally turns violent reveals their barbarous nature, the district women apex body stated. Clips are clearly seen where the rally participants picked pebbles and stone to pelt and attack the SDSA leaders and openly screaming “We demand kukiland, This is kukiland” in Naga inhabited areas has gone beyond the tolerance of the peace loving people, said SDWA.

The women’s body also urged for tactfulness and mindfulness in dealing with sensitive issues during this fragile juncture adding to let the amber of violence subside.

On the other hand, the Thangal Anleinao Jonlong (TAJ) condemned the act of moving forward even in the Naga inhabited areas despite multiple appeals and warning in the form of press release and various other means. The TAJ stated it take it as a direct attack and threat to Nagas in general, and Nagas living in the so called Kangpokpi district in particular.

The Thangal Anleinao Jonlong (TAJ) as one of the federating units of Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) maintained extreme restrain despite various provocations in the spirit of neutrality and co-existence. However, to their dismay, the act of complete disrespect which undermined their very existence is something they could not comprehend their intent and motive towards the said rally conducted on 31st August, 2024.

The Thangal Students Union stated that they are not against any agitation or public rally organised by any group or community for their interest. However, organising public rally or any kind of agitation, be it peaceful or non-peaceful even within the Naga
areas despite appeal and warning to abstain from it can be considered as a direct challenge or war against the people.

The August 31 incident at Tumnoupokpi and Yaikongpao village chanting “We want Kuki Land/this is Kukiland” signalled a negative light towards the motive of the rally and become very suspicious of their intent and motive behind ignoring friendly and legitimate appeal and warning issued by the SDSA. The student body warns that if such nature or behaviour continues, the student body will be held responsible.
