United Tribal Council, Manipur Constituted; Says It will Uphold Tribal Rights and Aspirations

Ukhrul: In a development aimed at uniting the tribal communities of Manipur, the “United Tribal Council, Manipur” (UTCM) was formally constituted during a meeting held at Tangkhul Avenue Community Hall, Imphal. The newly formed council seeks to represent the interests of all tribal groups in the state, with a focus on championing their rights, solidarity, and aspirations.

The formation of the UTCM marks a milestone in the tribal movement in Manipur, with a strong and diverse leadership team elected to steer the council’s mission forward. Yaruingam Ningshen was unanimously chosen as the President, while John Pamei will serve as the Vice President. The General Secretary position will be held by Athui Panmei, with K.S. Graceson Soso assuming the role of Finance Secretary. Additionally, R. Asing has been appointed as Assistant General Secretary, and H. Shimray as the Information and Publicity Secretary.

The council also elected Worthing Horam as the Secretary of Advocacy and Public Relations, while Ramtahung, H. Mibaa, and M. Tantanga were named as members of the Executive Council.

To support the functioning of the council, an Advisory and Planning Committee (APC) has also been established. Ningreingam Kashung will serve as the Convenor of the APC, alongside members Samson Keishing, Paothing Awungshi, Dr. Chand Thangmi, and D.L. Leivon. This committee will assist in providing advice, counsel, and mentorship to the UTCM leadership as they work towards achieving the council’s goals.

Peter Kapai, an advocate at the Manipur High Court, has been appointed as the legal advisor for the UTCM and will provide legal counsel whenever necessary.

The UTCM leadership emphasized that the remaining vacancies in the Executive Council will be filled in due course, with appropriate consultation among the various tribal communities in Manipur.

The establishment of the United Tribal Council, Manipur, is seen as a crucial step towards greater unity among tribal communities, with a firm commitment to promoting their collective rights and achieving lasting social and economic empowerment.
