Ukhrul: The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly condemned the abduction and assault of Joshua Kamei on November 5. In a statement issued by the UNC’s Information & Publicity Wing, the council expressed deep concern over the increasing number of unwarranted incidents, which have severely impacted the Naga populace amid the ongoing conflict. The UNC specifically pointed to violence by valley-based armed miscreants as a major issue of concern. The recent case of Joshua Kamei, a Rongmei community member and railway company driver, who was abducted and brutally assaulted near Kheiku Kabui Khul Gate in Imphal East on November 5, 2024, is seen as part of this disturbing trend. Condemning this “dastardly and cowardly” act, the council questioned the motives behind such incidents, which disrupt peace for Nagas in the state.

“Enough is enough!” the UNC declared, noting that it has been seventeen months since the May 3, 2023, outbreak of violence, during which ethnic communities, including Nagas, have endured immense suffering. The council warned that the patience of the Naga public is wearing thin in the face of ongoing hardships and provocations from both sides in the conflict.
The Naga people view these provocative actions with serious concern, demanding prompt and effective action from the state authorities. The UNC called for policies and measures to curb criminal activities and acts of dehumanization to restore law and order. It emphasized the need for timely justice for victims and for exemplary punishment of perpetrators under the law. Civil society organizations were also urged to address these issues proactively to prevent further escalation.

The UNC appealed to various authorities and responsible civil organizations in the state to intervene and put an end to the proliferation of unauthorized checkpoints, unwarranted checks, detentions, and restrictions imposed on Naga people in various areas. The council also called for action against illegal taxation and extortion targeting commuters and essential goods suppliers along national and inter-district highways, aiming to restore peace and stability in Manipur.
The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), Senapati and its frontal organization including the Senapati District Students Association (SDSA) and Senapati District Womens’ Association(SDWA) also vehemently condemned the abduction and assault terming it “heinous barbaric act.”
