Shillong: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has vehemently condemned a domestic violence case in Meghalaya, where a woman in her mid-30s sustained 45% burn injuries after allegedly being set on fire by her husband. The NCW has recommended legal action against the husband and his family.
NCW member Delina Khongdup, alongside Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Iamon Syiem, visited the victim, currently readmitted to Shillong Civil Hospital, to assess her condition. The incident occurred a month ago in Niriang village, West Jaintia Hills district, and was uncovered after a well-wisher visited the victim.

Khongdup assured strict action, stating, “The husband is in custody, and we aim to deny him bail while the victim remains critical.” She emphasized raising awareness to prevent such incidents and encouraged society to support victims.
Dr. C. Wanniang, treating the victim, clarified that she left the hospital on November 1 against medical advice and without formal discharge. The patient, a mother of six, initially reported her burns as accidental and remains reluctant to share details.

MSCW chairperson Syiem urged a reinvestigation, emphasizing the need for better coordination between agencies. She noted plans to assign a social health worker for such cases.
Khongdup reiterated the alarming domestic violence rates in Meghalaya, with the NCW receiving 10-15 daily complaints from the Northeast. Despite Meghalaya’s matrilineal society, violence against women persists. She urged victims to speak out and mentioned NCW’s Her Legal Guide app, designed to educate women on their rights.
