Shillong, April 21: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has expressed heartfelt condolences on the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as “a good soul” and “a friend of the youth.”

Speaking to reporters in Shillong today, Lyngdoh said the Pope was admired for his honest interpretation of Church doctrine and his willingness to engage with difficult global issues.

“He was focused on positive participation of the Church in matters of the world, especially on conservative and controversial issues. His clarity and honesty will be missed by Catholics and non-Catholics alike,” she said.

She added that despite his health challenges in recent months, many still hoped the Pope would continue his leadership. “His messages resonated with the modern generation. I personally feel this loss and will remember him in prayer,” she said.

The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also extended its condolences, remembering Pope Francis as a spiritual giant whose legacy transcended borders and faiths.

In a statement, BJP state president Rikman G Momin noted the Pope’s groundbreaking role as the first pontiff from South America and his wide-reaching influence on issues such as climate change, women’s roles in the Church, and global compassion.

“His message of love and inclusion inspired not just Catholics, but people from all faiths. His unwavering dedication to the welfare of humanity and the environment stands as a lasting inspiration,” Momin said.
