Ukhrul: The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) has accused the Government of India of deceitful practices in handling the Indo-Naga political issue. In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP), NSCN alleged that the government has been using “purposeful falsehood” to mislead the world on the Naga political issue and the identity of the Naga people since the beginning of the peace talks in 1997.

The statement claimed that the Indian government has consistently used deceit, creating false impressions to discredit the NSCN and keeping the organization “on the wrong side of justice.” It described the government’s approach to the Naga issue as one marked by “suppressive and divisive policies,” which the group says have persisted for over 70 years.

The NSCN also raised concerns over India’s alleged breach of the 2002 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Milan, Italy. The MoU required the government to stop referring to the NSCN as a “terrorist outfit” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The statement called the term a “misnomer” and criticized the government’s failure to uphold the spirit of the agreement.

Specifically, the NSCN highlighted the prolonged incarceration of Kilonser Alemla Jamir, whom it referred to as a “Prisoner of War” under international law. The statement alleged that Jamir has been unfairly labelled as a member of a “terrorist outfit” and has been imprisoned for over four years. The NSCN called this treatment “unjust” and “bereft of sincerity,” claiming it aims to intimidate the Nagas into submission.

The NSCN reiterated its position that the group cannot be “browbeaten into submission” and accused the government of failing to act with courage and integrity to resolve the long-standing political issue. “This has been the politics in the Naga revolutionary movement for the past 70 years,” the statement said, adding that it continues to “confound the politically conscious people within India itself.”
