Concerns about the environment are growing around the world as governments, scientists, and activists are witnessing hands-on devastating effects of climate change. Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are taking proactive steps to help protect and heal natural areas. Environmental Force at Grassroots Level (ENFOGAL) is one such Non-governmental organisations based in Ukhrul.
Initiated by young and aspiring social groups in town in the endeavour for a sustainable environment, ENFOGAL actions at protecting and reviving the collapsing environment of Ukhrul district.
As part of an awareness programme this holiday season, ENFOGAL have installed and decorated a Christmas tree made out of e-wastes in the heart of the town, Gandhi Chowk, Phungreitang. This is an ongoing tradition which they have been following since the past three years. In the past years they have used pet bottles, compact disc etc. to decorate Christmas trees. This year it’s an e-wastes Christmas tree. The e-wastes have either been collected from dumping sites or have been received by donations.
The sole purpose of this Christmas tree project is to create an awareness about recycling and reusing waste materials, keeping in mind the preserving of environment.
ENFOGAL seeks to raise awareness on the importance of solid waste management, issues of global warming and water management in Ukhrul town. They are also devoted to wildlife conservation drive where they organise wildlife camps and nature camps from time to time. ENFOGAL also provide garbage collection services within the town. Ukhrul residents may avail this service three times in a week.
Travellers between Imphal-Jessami road can look forward to an environmentally friendly sight as ENFOGAL is all set to build a Christmas tree made out of tyres at Finch Corner. Since its inception in 2016, ENFOGAL have organised various awareness programmes on cleanliness and conservation of environment in schools, colleges and villages.
“Deforestation, habit destruction and unorganised waste management are prevalent in Ukhrul town. Moreover, there is drainage and septic tank crisis in most part of the localities. Areas close to Ukhrul have e-coli contamination making waterborne diseases very common in the town. Jhum cultivation, poaching and poisoning and trapping of wildlife are some of the issues that are big threat to the nature and environment”, says one of the co-founders of ENFOGAL
