Air India Names Boeing 777 ‘Sikkim’ to Mark 50th Statehood Anniversary

Published on

Air India has named one of its Boeing 777-300 aircraft ‘Sikkim’ to commemorate the state’s 50th Statehood Anniversary. The naming coincides with Sikkim’s golden jubilee of joining the Indian Union in 1975, marking a significant milestone in the state’s history.

The aircraft, now featuring the name ‘Sikkim’ near its nose, has been welcomed as a symbol of recognition and national integration. Residents of the state have expressed pride in the gesture, which highlights Sikkim’s contributions over the past five decades.

Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975. Since then, it has been noted for its achievements in ecological conservation, education, and inclusive development. The Air India tribute reflects these accomplishments and brings national attention to the state.

This is part of Air India’s tradition of naming its aircraft after Indian states to promote unity and diversity. While several states like Kerala, Gujarat, and Punjab have received this honour in the past, this is the first time a plane has been named after Sikkim.

As the newly named ‘Sikkim’ aircraft joins the fleet on global routes, it carries with it the pride, identity, and aspirations of the state, serving as a flying tribute to 50 years of statehood.
