Aizawl Declares Holiday for Schools Amid Landslide and Flood Fears

Ukhrul, May 30: Amid continued heavy rainfall and the threat of mudflows, landslides, and rockfalls, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Aizawl District, has declared Friday, May 30, 2025, as a holiday for all schools across the district. The decision was made in view of students’ safety and potential road hazards caused by the inundation.

In an official notice issued by Er. Lalhriatpuia, IAS, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the administration cited risks stemming from intense rainfall in recent hours. The declaration is made under powers vested in the Deputy Commissioner by Section 30(v) read with Section 2(d) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and based on guidance received from the Indian Meteorological Department.

The notice said that non-compliance with the directive will be punishable under Section 51(b) of the DM Act, 2005. It also mentioned that the order follows critical deliberations and assessments from multiple official inputs and weather forecasts.

The administration urged residents to remain cautious and prioritize safety, particularly in areas vulnerable to landslides and road blockages.
