Red Alert of Very Heavy Rainfall Forecasts for Senapati and Tamenglong

Senapati, May 29: As per the Special Bulletin dated 29th May 2025, issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the National Weather Forecasting Centre has forecast extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds from 30th May, 08:30 IST to 31st May, 08:30 IST.

A Red Warning (Take Action) has been issued, along with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall (Orange and Yellow Warnings) till 3rd June, 08:30 IST in Senapati District, indicating the need to stay alert and be prepared.

In view of the above warning, the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati District has issued the following safety advisories for the public:

  • Stay informed by following official weather forecasts and alerts issued by local and national authorities.
  • Avoid travelling during periods of intense rainfall or wind. If travel is necessary or unavoidable, check for traffic congestion and advisories before departure.
  • Do not take shelter under trees or stay near metal objects during thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Reinforce and secure loose objects in and around your home.
  • Postpone outdoor activities, including farming and fishing, until the situation improves.
  • Stay away from vulnerable structures, flood-prone zones, rivers, and steep slopes.
  • Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using electronic devices during lightning.

Similarly for Tamenglong District, IMD on May 29 has issued a “Red Alert Warning” with squally wind with speed 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph and extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm in 24 hrs) very likely at isolated places over Tamenglong and Senapati district from 30th May 08:30 IST to 31st May 08:30 IST.

Advisories:

  1. People are advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places accordingly.
  2. Stay indoors, close windows & doors and avoid travel if possible.
  3. Take safe shelters; do not take shelter under trees, as there could be lightning.
  4. In case of expected lightning, unplug electrical/electronic appliances immediately, get out of water bodies and keep away from all the objects that conduct electricity.
  5. Avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often.
  6. Avoid staying in vulnerable structures.
  7. Be vigilant about possible landslides by observing movement of landmass, cracking of tree sounds, etc.
