Agartala: The Government of Assam has appointed Makhan Phukan as the first Director of Prosecution for a temporary period of four months. The appointment was announced through a notification issued by the Home and Political Department.
Three Deputy Directors of Prosecution— Dhanesh Das, Santanu Bhattacharyya, and Manash Haloi—were also appointed for the same four-month period under a separate notification. The terms and conditions of service for all appointees will be finalized later.

The appointments are part of the establishment of the new Directorate of Prosecution, which aims to support law enforcement and the judiciary in the state.

Following the appointments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the development on his official X handle, stating, “Assam Government has appointed the first ever Director for the newly created Directorate of Prosecution.”
He further said, “We are one of the first States to have a dedicated prosecution cadre to assist law enforcement & judiciary to build an impartial and efficient justice delivery mechanism.”
