IMPHAL: An Assam Rifles Pipe Band performed at the historic Kangla West Gate here on Tuesday as part of the celebrations leading up to India’s 80th Independence Day.
The programme, organised by the 33 Assam Rifles, featured an elite Pipe Band performing a series of patriotic songs aimed at promoting patriotism and enthusiasm among the people, particularly the youth.
Speaking to reporters, 33 Assam Rifles Commandant Colonel Radha Krishna said the celebrations were being organised at three locations this year to mark the Independence Day in a wider manner.

Following Tuesday’s performance at Kangla, the Assam Rifles will organise another Pipe Band display at Manipur University on Wednesday, with a further performance scheduled for the evening of August 15.
“The idea is to ensure that people can celebrate the Independence Day with josh, patriotism and enthusiasm,” Colonel Radhakrishna said.
The band performed 15 different songs during the display. The programme was attended by a number of dignitaries, students and members of the public.
Among those present were Manipur Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh, DGP Mukesh Kumar Singh, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) Major General Gaurav Sharma and Commander, 9 Sector Assam Rifles, Brigadier Pratyush Kumar, besides other civil dignitaries.
A large number of students and members of the public gathered at the historic Kangla venue to witness the performance.
