BJP’s Yumnam Khemchand set to become new Manipur CM

IMPHAL: Yumnam Khemchand has been elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party leader this evening in New Delhi, which means that he is the next chief minister of Manipur. This development is also to say that there will be a return of a popular government in Manipur which has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025 after the resignation of N Biren Singh chief minister. The current term of President’s Rule will expire on February 13, 2026.

It can be mentioned here that BJP legislators and MLAs of other NDA partners were called to reach Delhi by February 2 evening. No clear agenda was mentioned in the invitation, reports said. Sources said that a series of meetings was held following which 61 years old Yumnam Khemchand was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party.

Khemchand was first elected from Singjamei assembly constituency in Imphal West district from the BJP ticket in 2017. He was again elected in the 2022 assembly election.

Meanwhile, speculations are intensely doing the rounds that two deputy chief ministers will be created this time. But they do not specify clearly the names of the two probables.

Meanwhile, the return of a popular government in the ethnic violent torn state after a year’s gap signals so many things. Time will only tell whether the new development will ease the prevailing situation in the state or not.

Meanwhile, celebrations have begun in the residence of Yumnam Khemchand. His supporters have been converging in his official quarters as well as in his residence since the breaking of the news.

Khemchand had held the post of Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly in his first tenure and also a minister of Rural Development.

Meanwhile, sources said that the swearing-in of the new chief minister or installation of the new government will be done by February 9.
