Ukhrul: An early morning bomb scare unsettled Imphal City on Monday when a hand grenade was found at the gate of GP Women’s Government College, accompanied by a note condemning the “fascist education system” and supporting the “proletarian students’ free education movement.”

According to reliable sources, the note read, “Down with Fascist Education System, Honour the Rights of Proletarian Students’ Free Education Movement, Glory to the Proletarian Students.” The incident, which occurred near Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s residence, caused panic among pedestrians.

The grenade was discovered around 6 AM by passersby on Central Jail Road. Imphal Police Station officials and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad responded swiftly, successfully defusing the grenade by 6:40 AM and disposing of it around 7:20 AM in Lamphel Game Village. While no group has claimed responsibility, Imphal Police Station has registered a case, and investigations are underway.

In response, students of GP Women’s College held a protest, condemning the incident and urging authorities to safeguard educational institutions. One student emphasized the need to designate schools and colleges as Free Education Zones, asserting that students should be able to attend classes without fear of crime or conflict. The incident follows recent bomb and extortion threats across educational institutions in the Imphal Valley, heightening concerns over student safety in high-security areas.
