BSNL employee shot dead in Manipur

In a bizarre incident a 35-year-old JTO (Junior Telecom Officer) of BSNL has been shot dead by an elderly neighbor with a license gun on Saturday at Chingamathak Ngakraba Leirak under Singjamei police station of Imphal West district around 10 am.

The victim, identified as Suraj Gurumayum (35), succumbed to bullet injuries at Raj Medicity hospital where he was rushed to with critical injuries. The victim has bullet injury marks on his hand and chest. Quoting locals police said that a bullet pierced through his hand and hit the chest.

The accused who has been identified as Gurumayum Birchandra aka Molecule fled his home in a Maruti van which was used as an ambulance. A manhunt is on to nab the accused who is at large at the time of filing this report.

Birchandra is a politician and had contested State Assembly and Lok Sabha elections many times without any success.

Local sources recalled an incident of the accused attempting the life of the victim by ramming with a vehicle a few years ago.

The police are yet to establish the motive behind the shooting and are investigating if there was personal enmity considering the past events.
