By-poll in four assembly constituencies in Manipur held amid tight security measures

Polling to four Assembly constituencies spread over three districts of Manipur on Saturday witnessed a large turnout of voters amid tight security measures.

There were reports of disruptions of polling activities by political party workers in Saitu assembly constituency in Kangpokpi district. There were also reports of alleged threatening of voters by a group of people in Wangjing-Tentha assembly constituencies in Thoubal district.

However, there were no reports of major violence incidents at the polling stations that disturbed the voting process except delay in the commencement of the voting owing to technical problems in the EVMs.

The polling to fill up four vacant seats of the Manipur Assembly was conducted in Wangoi constituency of Imphal West district, Lilong and Wangjing-Tentha constituencies of Thoubal district and Saitu constituency of Kangpokpi district.

Meanwhile, even as ECI framed guidelines for conducting the voting that was conducted amid COVID-19 pandemic, violation of the guidelines was seen in most of the polling stations where voters were in congested queues.

Official voter turnout percentage was yet to be made officially by the state CEO office. However, they expected high voter turnout of overall above 80%.

Among the assembly constituencies, Lilong is expected to register above 90% voter turnout.
