Imphal: A cache of arms and ammunition was recovered on Wednesday as security forces continued search operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of strife-hit Manipur, police said.

The police said a team from Kakching district during a search operation in Hiyanglam Hiranmei Hiyangkhong areas today, around 9 am.

During the search operation, the team discovered a cache of arms and ammunition concealed in a bush in the Hiyangkhong area.

The items in a gunny bag were one country-made 9mm pistol with an empty magazine, one hand grenade without a detonator, three 2-inch mortar shells, two bulletproof jackets, one Baofeng handset with a battery and one pair of hunting boots.

The police source said the search operation began at 9 am and lasted till 9.30 am. The recovered items were handed over to Hiyanglam police station for further necessary legal action, the police added.

Manipur police also said, “Search operations and area domination were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts. During the search operations the following items were recovered: ii.02 (two) Sniper (12-bore), 01 (one) 9mm pistol with magazine (country made), 01 (one) gas gun (prahari) MK-II, 01 (one) .303 rifles (modified) with magazine, 04 (four) 12-bore single barrel rifles, 01 (one) tear gas shell long range, 01 (one) tear smoke grenade prahari MK-IV, 01 (one) tear smoke grenade (CS) anti-riot, 03 (three) 38mm cartridge Anti-riot with rubber bullet AFK Pune MK-III, 01 (one) stun gun anti-riot, 02 (two) live rounds and 02 (two) Improvised heavy mortar from Khengmol Village, Churachandpur District.”
