Chakma youth from Tripura dies after racial knife attack in Dehradun

UKHRUL: Angel Chakma (24) an MBA student from Tripura was attacked over racial slurs and gravely injured in Uttrakhand’s  Dehradun on December 9. Succumbing to his injuries almost 16 days after the attack Angel Chakma passed away on Thursday (December 25).

According to the FIR lodged on the complaint of Michael Chakma, brother of the deceased, the two were out to buy household things when the attackers, who were drunk, harassed them because of their appearance and shouted racial slurs.

Angel Chakma was allegedly stabbed several times with knives, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Graphic Era Hospital and was in the intensive care unit for the past two weeks. Despite medical attention, his condition deteriorated and he died on Thursday morning.

The police have arrested five people in connection with the case. They have been identified as Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khawas, Ayush Badoni and Sumit. Investigatio to trace the prime accused who is reportedly absconding is underway.

One of the arrested is from Manipur while the others are from Uttarakhand.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern over the safety of students from the North East in other parts of the country. Political and student originations have also sharply condemned the killing and stressed on justice.

Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh took to X and said, “…this painful incident must also remind those outside the Northeast to know that the Northeast is not a distant corner of India, it is India.”
