CHANDEL: In a significant initiative aimed at promoting youth and women empowerment, enhancing public awareness of policing and strengthening police-public relations, Chandel District Police on Thursday organised the ‘One Day SP’ programme under the leadership of Superintendent of Police, Chandel, Shri Dharmendra Tyagi, IPS.
The initiative provided a unique opportunity for Lk Peminhring, a first-semester student of South East Manipur College, Komlathabi, to experience the responsibilities and functioning of the Superintendent of Police, Chandel, by assuming the role of SP for a day. An active NCC cadet, Peminhring was selected for the opportunity as part of the district police’s efforts to encourage young people, particularly women, to develop leadership qualities, confidence and a better understanding of law enforcement.
Peminhring received a formal welcome from Additional SP, Chandel, Ts Chamna Anal, MPS, and SDPO, Chandel, N. Ingocha Singh, MPS, along with other police personnel at the SP Office. She was briefed by the SDPO on the day’s schedule, activities and responsibilities.
During the introductory session, the young SP was familiarised with the organisational hierarchy of the police department, its existing workforce and the wide range of administrative and operational responsibilities shouldered by the district police chief. The interaction offered her valuable insights into the leadership, coordination and decision-making involved in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
As part of the programme, Peminhring visited Chandel Police Station, where Officer-in-Charge Inspector L. Yoihenba and other personnel welcomed her. She was taken on a tour of the police station and briefed on its day-to-day functioning, duties and responsibilities. She was also informed that Chandel Police Station oversees 92 recognised villages under Chandel district, maintaining regular liaison with village authorities, chiefs and local communities. The police station also keeps track of individuals with criminal records as part of its efforts to strengthen surveillance and maintain peace and security in the area.
The programme further included a visit to Chandel Women Police Station, where WSI Lh. Tongam Anal, Second Officer-in-Charge, accompanied her and explained the functioning of the women police station. The visit highlighted the role of women police personnel in addressing issues concerning women and ensuring a responsive and accessible policing system.
Peminhring was subsequently taken to the frisking booth at Hnatham, where she witnessed a practical demonstration of active policing duties. The exposure offered her a closer understanding of the vigilance, discipline and preparedness required of police personnel while performing their responsibilities on the ground.
Expressing her happiness over the opportunity, Peminhring described the experience as a rare and memorable moment in her life. She said she felt fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve as SP for a day and expressed sincere gratitude to the Superintendent of Police, Chandel, and the entire police team for their initiative, warm reception, guidance and encouragement.

In her interaction with the correspondent, the SP for the day also appreciated Chandel District Police for its unbiased professionalism, sincerity and inclusive approach in maintaining law and order across the district. She acknowledged the dedication of police personnel and the importance of their service in ensuring the safety and security of the people.
The ‘One Day SP’ initiative goes beyond a symbolic transfer of responsibility, offering young participants an opportunity to understand the challenges, discipline and commitment associated with policing. By bringing young people closer to the functioning of the police administration, the programme seeks to bridge the gap between law enforcement agencies and the public while fostering mutual trust, awareness and cooperation.
The initiative also underscores the importance of encouraging young women to explore leadership roles and participate confidently in public institutions. Through such people-oriented programmes, Chandel District Police continues to highlight its commitment to inclusive policing, community engagement and the empowerment of the next generation.
