UKHRUL: A Meitei man identified as Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh (38), married to a Kuki woman, Chingnu Haokip, was allegedly abducted and murdered by suspected Kuki militants in Churachandpur on Wednesday.
As per reports, Haokip had taken prior consent from Kuki militant groups and authorities to allow her husband to visit her for a few days during his leave from work in Nepal. Later however, Singh along with his wife were abducted from their home and taken elsewhere.
A video clip purportedly of the incident has been widely circulating online in which the victim is seen pleading on his knees with folded hands before being shot. Police subsequently retrieved the body on Wednesday and transported it to the morgue of Churachandpur district hospital.
Churachadpur Police said it received information at around 10:15 pm on January 21, that Singh had been abducted by unknown miscreants from his house in the Tuibuong area and later killed at T. Natjang village. A suo motu FIR in connection with the case has been registered and investigation is underway, adding that efforts are on to nab the miscreants.
The deceased was a native of Kakching Kunou in Kakching district. After his marriage to Haokip, he adopted the tribal name Ginminthang. According to Singh’s family members, they learned of his return to Manipur only through the videos of the incident, despite the couple having been together in Churachandpur since December 19, 2025, following Singh’s return from Nepal.

Haokip was later released, after which she contacted Singh’s family members and informed them about his death. According to her account, three unidentified armed men arrived at their residence around 6 pm on Wednesday. She resisted but was overpowered. The couple was taken in a four-wheeler to a secluded area, where she was pushed out of the vehicle. She alleged that Singh was taken to a nearby hill and shot.
The incident has sparked outrage in the Manipur valley, with residents of Kakching Khunou staging protests and blocking the Indo-Myanmar Sugnu Road. Protesters condemned what the family of the deceased described as a “brutal killing”.
