Churachandpur: Rally Held Against Popular Government Formation in Manipur

CHURACHANDPUR: A massive peaceful rally was held in Churachandpur on Wednesday to voice public concerns regarding the proposed formation of a popular government in Manipur in the absence of political settlement and to reiterate the demand for a political solution to address unresolved grievances.

Jointly organized by Zomi Students Federation GHQ; Kuki  Student  Organisation, Churachandpur; and Hmar Students Association GHQ, the rally was held under the theme “We want political Solution, Not popular Government” with thousands of school and college students participating in the rally. 

The rally began from Lamka Public Ground, Hiangtam Lamka and culminated at Peace Ground, Tuibong in Churachandpur district.

A memorandum, seeking a political solution prior to the installation of a political government in Manipur, was submitted to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur. The memorandum highlighted the concerns of prolonged displacement and insecurity, breakdown of civil administration, erosion of public confidence, justice as the foundation of peace and risk of premature political transition.

It also appealed to the Prime Minister to initiate a structure and time bound political process to address the root cause of the present crisis, granting of an appropriate political status particular to the hill areas, ensuring robust mechanism for justice, rehabilitation of all displaced persons and deferring the installation of popular government until a meaningful political solution that guarantee peace and justice is achieved.

During the rally the students shouted slogans, including “Justice delayed is justice denied”, “No solution no rest”, “No solution, No popular Government “, among others, while also carrying banners that read ” we want political solution, not popular government”.
