Imphal, July 25: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) said that it will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India to withdraw Assam Rifles from Manipur, citing the recent statement of former BSF ADG PK Mihsra among other reasons.

COCOMI coordinator Somorendra Thokchom disclosed this during a press conference held today at the committee’s office in Lamphelpat.

Decrying that the situation of Manipur crisis has remained grim till today with no respite in violence, he said that it is pertinent to ponder on the recent statement made by former ADG of BSF PK Mishra when it comes to explore the reason for the no abetment of the crisis.

He said that Mishra’s comment of a specific paramilitary force which has a “close link” with Kuki militants that needs to be withdrawn is the Assam Rifles, adding that it is an open secret to all.

Alleging that there were so many instances of Kuki militants firing right under the nose of the Assam Rifles in the ongoing crisis, Somorendra maintained that there is an urgent need for urging the Central Government to withdraw the said paramilitary force from the state.

He also mentioned that a former Home Secretary to the Government of India has also stated that the government should apologize.

There were news reports of the arrest of Assam Rifles personnel for involvement in narcotics business and blocking the gate of Sugnu Police Station by the personnel of the paramilitary force among other misconducts, Somorendra added.

The COCOMI coordinator reiterated that there is an urgent need for the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the State in order to resolve the Manipur crisis.
