IMPHAL: Manipur Lok Sabha MP Bimol Akoijam expressed his appreciation to “Kuki and Tangkhul MLAs” for immediately rushing to Litan to douse the violence that erupted a few days ago between two communities. He then stressed the need to defeat what he termed as “communal ideology”.

The Congress MP was talking to media persons at his residence in Imphal this afternoon.

Litan in Ukhrul district remains tense after violence broke out between two communities. So many houses were burnt to ashes. However, the situation is relatively calm on Thursday.

According to Bimol, had the same step been taken by the concerned legislators on May 3, 2023, things would have been different. He said the “political maturity” displayed by the concerned MLAs on the Litan incident should be emulated by all. “We need this kind of political maturity very much,” said the Lok Sabha MP.

Bimol then said the problem in the society is the normalisation of “communal ideology”. He said that personal conflicts often lead to communal violence in the society. “We need to defeat this communal ideology”, he further stressed.

Bimol then expressed concern on videos circulated on social media related to the Litan incident where some people were seen wielding guns openly. “Only security forces can do that. Other than the security forces, no one should be allowed to do that”, he added. Bimol urged the government to make accountable to those people other than the security forces who are wielding guns openly.

The Lok Sabha MP from Manipur then encouraged the culture of dialogue.
