Imphal: The Modi government’s failure to address the crisis in Manipur for the last nine months effectively is a part of the injustice meted to the people of the country for the last 10 years, AICC general secretary Ranajit Mukherjee alleged on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in Congress Bhavan in Imphal, the AICC general secretary highlighted the failures of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre under the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi.

He said that the plight of Manipur, marked by prolonged unrest without substantive resolution efforts by the Modi government, is a grave injustice meted out to the people of the state.

“The continued unrest in Manipur for more than nine months without any genuine effort at resolution by the Modi government is the biggest ‘Anyay’ in the country. We are still awaiting the prime minister to speak up on Manipur,” he said.

The AICC general secretary criticized the BJP and prime minister Narendra Modi for going back on pre-2014 promises, particularly regarding MSP based on the recommendations of late MS Swaminathan.

He said that the Congress party is committed to enact a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for various crops upon assuming power at the center in India.

The party’s commitment was underscored by the party’s resolution on agriculture during its Raipur session, emphasizing MSP as a top priority agenda once the Congress-led government takes office following the 2024 general elections, he said.

Mukherjee alleged that despite Modi’s prior commitments, an affidavit filed by the BJP government in the Supreme Court of India contradicted the promised MSP increase.

He highlighted the ongoing farmers’ protests, citing instances of alleged excessive force by BJP-led authorities, notably in Haryana, to thwart peaceful marches.

He said that under the Modi government, the country registered the highest unemployment rate in 45 years. There were one crore unemployed men and women in the country. However, it has been increased to four crore.

There are 10 lakh sanctioned government jobs which have not been filled up, the AICC leader pointed out.

In the current scenario, one-third of the graduates and post-graduates are looking for jobs in this country, he alleged.

It is due to a wide range of unfulfilled promises and economic challenges under Modi’s tenure, including stagnant job creation, farmers’ income stagnation, adverse impacts of demonetization and GST implementation, and escalating prices of essential commodities despite favorable international market conditions, he said.

Mukherjee further expressed concern over the alleged media control exerted by the Modi government while alleging that the incumbent government suppressed the dissenting voices besides monopolization of the narrative.

Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism for change, asserting that the countdown to the end of injustice has begun, with the anticipation of a new era once the Congress assumes power.
