Imphal: Congress party in Manipur demanded a high level inquiry into the cancellation of 1255 work programmes amounting to Rs 668.68 crore in the Public Works Department (PWD).

Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Imphal today, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, K Meghachandra alleged that the state government has cancelled 1255 work programmes which were meant for improvement of roads across the 60 assembly constituencies of the state sanctioned in the financial year 2020-21. According to the MPCC leader, these work programmes had already got administrative approval and the implementation process got started by the contractors after completing the tender processes.

The PWD has cancelled the work programmes citing that no expenditure sanctioned order from the state Finance department. The cancellation of the work programs is unreasonable, the MPCC president also said. He then asked, “Where have the sanctioned funds gone?”

The state government should conduct a high level enquiry into the matter, the MPCC president insisted while demanding a white paper from the BJP government.

Meghachandra then said that implementation of some of the works got started and contractors had also deposited the necessary security amount for the implementation of the works.

He said that out of the 1255 works which the PWD got the administration approval for, 444 works were to be implemented in the hill districts of the state and 811 in valley districts.

The MPCC leader also said that the funds for the works were also approved by the house of the Assembly and the opposition members had not raised any objection while passing the budget as it was for the welfare of the people.
