COVID death toll at 16, fresh cases 179 recorded in Manipur

UT News Service | Imphal, Aug 16: Three persons including a BSF personnel died due to COVID-19 related illness in Manipur on Sunday. This update has taken the COVID-19 related fatalities to 16 in the state. According to reports, the BSF personnel posted in the state was the first case of COVID-19 related fatality among Central security personnel in the state, COVID-19 Common Control Room said. 

Two of the three including the BSF personnel died at RIMS hospital while the other one died JNIMS hospital. The 44-year-old deceased BSF identified as Basantakumar belonged to the 182th battalion BSF based at Korengei in Imphal. With chronic kidney diseases including uraemic encephalopathy, severe anaemia and COVID associated pneumonia, he was admitted at RIMS hospital on August 14, a hospital source said. He was in intensive care and died at around 9.40 am, it added.

One of the locals who died at JNIMS hospital due to the disease was a 73-year-old from Imphal West district. The last one was a 94-year-old who died at RIMS hospital, the official report said.

Manipur recorded 179 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Sunday during the testing of 2,261 samples. Among them, 111 are from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and 68 from the local population.

Till date, 1192 CAPF personnel have been infected by the disease in the state. The recovery rate among them was very low as only 247 of them had so far recovered from the disease, the source added. Currently 944 CAPF personnel are being treated at various Covid care facilities across the state. This number was against 977 active cases among the general populace.

Meanwhile, 60 fresh cases of COVID-19 have no recent travel history. The report further showed discharge of 194 cases after they were recovered from the disease on Sunday. Eighteen of the discharged cases are CAPF.

The state has 4569 cases of the disease which include 1921 active cases. The discharged cases rose to 2632.The recovery rate in the state stands at 57.60%.
