Death toll in Assam flood surpasses Covid -19

UT News Service | July 25: With at least 96 deaths reported, due to flood related incidents, Assam seems to be facing a more deadly situation than Covid-19 pandemic while the death toll due to covid 19 stands at 76 in Assam.

Nearly 28 lakh people in 26 of the state’s 33 districts are affected by flood in Assam. One death each is reported from Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Morigoan districts taking the death toll to 96, the Assam State Disaster Management said on Friday. Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi undertook an aerial survey of the flood affected areas of the state on Thursday and said he would recommend the center for finding out a permanent solution to the flood and erosion of the state.

Flood and erosion have been playing havoc in the state of Assam for years together, causing large scale devastation to the very livelihood and survival of mankind and fauna. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi have assured all support amid flood and relief funds have been raised by people, flood affected victims in Assam continues to battle their survival with extreme difficulties.

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, wrote to the park’s Director P Sivakumar expressing his grieve. The letter was made available to the press by park authorities on July 24. In the letter Prince William mentioned he was deeply upset to hear the deaths of so many animals, including the one – horned rhino. “Catherine and I greatly admire all the work that you and the rangers at Kaziranga are doing to risk your own safety, rescue animals and contain the damage”, the Prince wrote. “We offer our deepest condolences to all those affected”, added the Duke.
