IMPHAL/UKHRUL: A large consignment of foreign liquor was seized at Imphal International Airport on Wednesday after members of the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) conducted a checking drive based on specific intelligence.
According to DESAM, the liquor had been brought to Imphal from Delhi on an IndiGo flight. Following the operation, the organisation handed over the seized consignment along with the individuals carrying it to the police for further investigation.
Speaking to reporters at the airport, DESAM Secretary for Anti-Drug Abuse, Ningthoukhongjam Nobinchandra, said the organisation acted on credible information about the arrival of a huge quantity of foreign liquor.

“After receiving reliable information, our members carried out a verification at the airport and recovered around 60 bags filled with foreign liquor. It is unfortunate that such consignments continue to find their way into the state. Our society is already facing serious challenges due to the growing menace of drugs and other intoxicants. Such illegal activities must be stopped immediately,” he said.
Nobinchandra further alleged that some people carrying similar consignments might still be inside the airport, choosing not to come out after learning about DESAM’s checking drive.
He also questioned the claim of those carrying the liquor that it was meant for personal consumption, saying the quantity recovered was too large to be considered for individual use and was likely intended for commercial distribution.
Police have taken custody of the seized liquor and the individuals involved. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the consignment and whether any laws were violated.
