In today’s digital era, cellphones and other mobile devices have become an integral part of life, particularly among the young people. Due to the widespread usage of mobile phones and easy access to the internet, today’s youth are more connected than ever. Mobile phones provide various benefits, such as communication, access to educational resources, and tools for daily convenience. However, this dependence on technology has also brought about numerous distractions and challenges. It leads us to a critical and thought-provoking question: Can a youth live, study, and be successful at the same time without using mobile devices in this present digital age? The answer is a definite yes.
The Possibility of Success Without Mobile Devices:
While mobile phones are useful tools, success does not depend on them. Success is determined by personal discipline, time management, goal-setting, and adherence to strong moral and spiritual values. A youth who is focused, guided by purpose, and rooted in the principles taught in the Bible and by elders can thrive regardless of whether they own a mobile phone.
Advantages of Mobile Devices:
There is no doubt that there are many advantages and benefits of using mobile phones. They allow for instant communication and help stay connected with family and friends. They also provide access to educational platforms, digital libraries, online courses, and even emergency services. Mobile phones also assist in day-to-day tasks such as banking, navigation, scheduling, and note-taking.
According to a 2025 survey conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, approximately 97.1 per cent of Indian youth aged 15–29 used mobile phones in the past three months. This statistic reflects the widespread integration of mobile technology in both urban and rural communities. For many, mobile phones have made life more convenient and accessible.
Disadvantages of Mobile Devices:
Despite their benefits, the misuse of mobile phones poses serious threats. Many young people tend to overuse mobile phones for social media, gaming, and non-productive chatting. This indulgence results in several negative consequences, including poor academic performance, lack of physical activity, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Social relationships with parents, elders, and peers often suffer.
Furthermore, mobile addiction can lead to isolation, decreased motivation, and involvement in unhealthy or false online relationships. Tragically, many young people lose their most productive years chasing temporary digital pleasures. As the Thadou Kuki proverb says, “Kou kit theilou nikho,” meaning, you cannot call back the day. Time once wasted can never be regained.
The Importance of Spiritual and Moral Guidance:
In such a challenging environment, youth need strong moral and spiritual guidance and constant encouragement from parents and elders of the church and society. The Bible provides clear and timeless wisdom that applies powerfully to modern life. Ephesians 6:1-3 encourages children to obey their parents, promising blessings and longevity in return. 1 Peter 5:5 instructs the young to submit to their elders with humility. Proverbs 19:20 advises us to accept discipline and listen to wise counsel. These scriptures emphasize that obedience, humility, discipline, and respect are key components of a successful life. A young person who follows biblical principles and heeds the guidance of parents and elders can overcome distractions and live a purposeful life, even without modern technology.
Real-Life Examples of Success Without Mobile Phones:
Real-life testimonies further affirm that it is possible to succeed without relying on mobile devices. A young man, preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, deliberately chose not to use a mobile phone, despite being offered one by his father. He believed that it would distract him from his goal. Instead, he followed a disciplined schedule, placed his trust in God, and did his part sincerely by studying hard. As a proverb goes, “Hard work leads to success.” His determination was rewarded when he successfully passed the UPSC exam.
Another example is of a pastor’s daughter who used her mobile phone only for essential communication. As her guardian, I often sent her messages, but she rarely replied immediately. Her limited use of the phone reflected her commitment to staying focused. When looking for coaching accommodation, she specifically asked for a room where her friends could not visit frequently to avoid distractions. Her self-discipline paid off as she too cleared the UPSC exam.
These stories clearly show that mobile phones are merely tools; they do not determine success. What truly matters is a person’s discipline, focus, and trust in God.

While mobile phones offer many advantages in the modern world, they are not essential for success. A youth can live purposefully, study effectively, and achieve great things without using a mobile device, provided they live a disciplined life, honour their parents and elders, and stay committed to their goals. For those who choose to use mobile phones, it must be done with wisdom, restraint, and responsibility.
As the Bible reminds us in Matthew 19:26, “With God all things are possible,” and Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…,” success in this age depends more on one’s character, conviction, hard work, and God’s guidance than on access to technology.
To the youth of today: Choose the narrow path of discipline, godliness, and purpose. Do not let mobile devices become a distraction or a hindrance. Rise up to become examples to your generation. If you walk with God and stay focused on your calling, you will be a blessing to others and an inspiration to many. May today’s youth rise not as slaves to devices, but as leaders guided by divine purpose.Amen!
