‘Disregard for Kuki Rights’: KHRC Hits Back at MHA Advisor AK Mishra

Published on

CHURACHANDPUR, NOVEMBER 10: The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) has strongly condemned the statement made by Ministry of Home Affairs (Northeast) Advisor AK Mishra rejecting the demand of the Kuki armed groups, KNO/UPF, for a Union Territory with a legislative assembly.

The KHRC said it “views this statement as a clear disregard for the legitimate aspirations and rights of the Kuki people, who have been fighting for their rights and self-determination for decades.”

In its statement issued on November 9, the KHRC maintained, “We emphasize that the Kuki Hills, also known as Kukiland, were never under Manipur state Darbar’s control pre-independence, and therefore, the Kuki people’s demand for a Union Territory is a legitimate exercise of their right to self-determination.”

The Kuki people, KHRC said, have their own ancestral land, and their demand for a separate administration is not subject to consultation with other communities. The Kukis, Meiteis, and Nagas all have their own distinct identities and territories, and it is essential to respect their individual rights and aspirations.

“The current situation in Manipur is a stark reminder of the need for a separate administration for the Kuki people. The ethnic conflict and cleansing have resulted in the loss of over 200 Kuki lives and the destruction of over 200 Kuki villages, perpetrated by Meitei groups, Manipur state forces, and Meitei militants. This violence has created an environment where it is impossible for the Kuki and Meitei communities to coexist in the same administration,” it added.

The KHRC said it further “demands that the government reconsider its stance and engage in constructive talks with the KNO/UPF to address the Kuki people’s genuine grievances and aspirations. The Kuki community’s demand for a Union Territory with a legislative assembly is a minimum requirement to ensure their safety, security, and self-determination.”
