District administration Ukhrul destroys poppy plants at Ringui

Ukhrul: In continuation of the state government’s drive to make Manipur a drug-free state, the district administration Ukhrul conducted a survey and destroyed more than 20 acres of land under illegal poppy plantation at Ringui village under Lungchong Meiphai sub- division on Wednesday.

The district administration, Ukhrul led by Krishna Kumar, deputy commissioner, Ukhrul along with Ningshen Vashum, SP, Ukhrul and a team comprising of 6th MR and SDO/ LM block surveyed and destroyed more than 20acres of land under illegal poppy plantation at Ringui Village under Lungchong Meiphai Sub-Division today.

Many illegal materials used for the plantation of poppy cultivations were also seized by the visiting team, a release issued by DIO/DIPR said, and warned that actions will be initiated against the defaulting villagers.

The drive was conducted with the view to espouse the vision of chief minister, N. Biren Singh, to realize a drug free Manipur, it said.

Awareness campaign on alternative livelihood was also held at Ringui (Tungou) village and neighbouring non- poppy cultivating Teinem village.

Seeds and manures under district agriculture, horticulture and soil conservation department, Ukhrul were also distributed during mass awareness campaign.

The district administration will strive to bring about a drug-free atmosphere in the district and engage wholeheartedly to provide alternative livelihoods to the beneficiaries of poppy plantation, it added.
