Ukhrul: The Naga community mourns the loss of Dr. Gina Shangkham, an extraordinary leader and advocate for tribal welfare, who passed away on January 2, 2025, at 5:50 AM. Dr. Shangkham, a trailblazer in many respects, leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled service and dedication to the cause of the Naga people and beyond.

Dr. Gina Shangkham was a woman of many firsts. She was the first woman from the Moyon Naga tribe to earn a doctorate, a testament to her commitment to education and intellectual pursuit. Her groundbreaking achievements did not stop there; she became the inaugural president of the Naga Women’s Union, Manipur (NWUM) established in 1994, a position from which she championed women’s rights and tribal unity. Her tenure as NWUM president marked a transformative period for the organization, which grew to become a powerful voice for social justice under her leadership.

Notably, her contributions to society were recognized with the prestigious “Laarchangnuw Award”, bestowed upon her for her selfless service to the welfare of various tribal communities, and for her relentless advocacy and commitment to uplifting marginalized groups through dialogue, education, and grassroots activism.

Dr. Shangkham’s work extended far beyond the boundaries of her immediate community. Her vision for an inclusive and equitable society continues to inspire countless individuals and organizations.

Valleyrose Hungyo, Co-Founder, Editor of The Āja Daily, paying tribute to Dr. Gina Shangkham said, “She has given almost all her strength and services for the people and the Naga cause. She was a beautiful human being.”

Valleyrose remembering her time spent with Dr. Shangkham recalled, “I first met her in 1994 when we were working out to form the Naga Women’s Union. She was working in Manipur University at that time. When Naga Women’s Union was officially formed in Ukhrul, she was elected to be the president, much against her will but later gave in to work for the cause of the people. She has a great heart to serve the people. We will miss her a lot. Nobody can replace her. Our friendship continued even outside the NWU work. She was so open as a friend. Even when she was very sick she gave her best smile and we could have a good laugh together.”

Dr. Gina Shangkham contributions to the Naga people and tribal welfare will endure for generations. Her life’s work serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of courage, perseverance, and compassion.
