A drug user who was admitted at a Covid care centre in Imphal after he was tested positive for COVID-19 has escaped from the centre, an official report said on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old male drug user was found missing from the Covid care centre at the RD Wing, Lamphelpat of Imphal West district on Tuesday morning, a missing report of the medical officer of the centre said.

As per a letter of the MO to the Social Welfare department, the drug user was admitted to the centre by the official of the department.

Official sources said that he was admitted at the centre yesterday after he tested positive during a mass testing for street-based drug users organised by the social welfare department in association with some NGOs.

At the time of admission, he was asymptomatic.

As reported by some patients of the centre, he was seen wandering around the corridor at midnight causing disturbance to other in-patients.

The MO reported that he was found missing from his room with his belongings when staff of the centre went for a morning round.

The MO urged the director of the Social Welfare department to take necessary action while requesting him to arrange a separate centre for the management of such patients (drug users).

Officials of the state Social Welfare department admitted the drug user after he was tested positive for the disease during a mass testing camp hosted by the department on Monday.
A total of 33 drug users including four women turned up to the camp.

The department had organised the camp in association with FINGODAP- Manipur Chapter and Drug Users’ Federation for Human Rights and Justice.
