Imphal: A one-day seminar on “Empowering Women: Combating Substance Abuse in Manipur” organized by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) under the sponsorship of National Commission for Women (NCW) was held at The Jubilee Hall, D.M. College of Teacher Education in Imphal today.
The program was attended by MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, MSCW Member Lourembam Dayabati, MSCW Member T. Chuongsin Koireng, MSCW Member Secretary, W. Phajatombi Devi, MCS and R.K.Lokendra Singh, Principal, D.M. College of Teacher Education were present on the dais.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the seminar, MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang stated that the seminar was organised mainly to give awareness and disseminate information about substance abuse. MSCW desires that the participating students become the messenger to spread awareness to the Manipuri society, she said.
She emphasized on the contribution of women in the society. Empowering women is important in the development of every family and community. Women are the backbone of families and communities. Women play a significant role in society. In eliminating the menace of drug abusers in this society, the MSCW has a very crucial role to play. The use of drugs and alcohol is one of the biggest problems faced by people today. Saying that today’s program is highly fruitful, she appealed one and all to save the youth from drug addiction to save society.

During the technical session, S.C. Inaocha, Secretary, Meitei Leimarol Sinai Sang, Khoyathong delivered a lecture on “Dealing with Women with Substance Abuse: Genesis, Success Stories and Challenges”.
Indira Devi, Regional Coordinator, Regional Resource Co-ordinating Centre, Department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Imphal spoke on the causes and Psychological Impacts of “Substance Abuse and Women.
Sobhana Sorokhaibam, Founder, Nirvana Foundation, North AOC, Imphal emphasized on “Substance Abuse and Women: Its causes and impact on the Society.”

Hijam Kishorechand Singh, Project Coordinator cum Vocational Counsellor, Anouba Mangal TRUST Centre, Social Welfare Department, Manipur spoke on the topic “Rehabilitating Women with Substance Abuse: Vulnerability, Victimisation and Challenges of Institutional Care.”
L Ranjana Devi, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, National Coalition of People Living with HIV (NCPI+) delivered lecture on “Drug Abuse among women in Northeast India” and Prof. Dr. R.K. Lenin Singh, MD, Ph.D, Department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Imphal delivered his lecture on “Drug Abuse and Its impact on Family.”
