Final rites of two Meitei youths performed without their bodies

Imphal: Final rites of Atom Samarendra and Yumkhaibam Kirankumar from Khumbong Mayai Leikai who have been missing since May 6 were performed on Friday without their bodies.

The two missing Meitei youths are suspected to have been killed at the peak of Manipur violence but their bodies are yet to be recovered.

As per Meitei customs, the ceremony was performed for their eternal rest using Pangong tree planks in place of their bodies. Imphal West Students Club organised the ceremony held at the club ground.

A memorial pillar of the deceased persons was also unveiled during the ceremony.

President of Imphal West Students Club, Oinam Samarendra speaking at the ceremony appealed to all the indigenous communities in Manipur to unite in protecting the state’s territorial integrity.

The final rites ceremony was also attended by local MLA and Health Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan sharing the griefs of the bereaved families.

It may be mentioned that four mortal remains belonging to the Meitei community were airlifted from Churachandpur district on December 14 after 8 months into Manipur’s ethnic violence. Bodies of Abhujam Ibemhal, Ksh Sunilkumar and Soibam Othello were claimed by respective families. However, the body of Ibochou was deposited at JNIMS morgue after the family failed to claim it.
