First ever Luira Veterans Cup for 40+ players kicks off in Ukhrul

Ukhrul: The first ever Veterans Cup for 40+ football veterans kicked off at Mission Ground on Wednesday. The tournament, organised by the Phungyo Baptist Church Football Committee is the first of its kind in Ukhrul aimed to promote health and well-being amongst veteran football players.

Dan Mung, Convenor of the organising committee expressed his pride in helping organise such a tournament.

“Football is a sport that Tangkhuls love and revere. During every tournament played in town, the elderly section of the community are always the first to arrive and support the youngsters. However, no tournaments exist in Ukhrul for the ex players or the veterans to play. Taking that in consideration, our Committee (Phungyo Baptist Church Football Committee) decided to organise this tournament coinciding with the Luira Festival”.

Ten teams from around Ukhrul signed up for the tournament with players as old as 75 years participating in the knockout tournament.

“We hope it will be a good way to promote fitness and well-being of the players as well as provide a means of recreation for the veterans to relive the memories from when they were playing. We hope we will be able to make this tournament a yearly affair,” Dan further added.
