First Hao cultural Academy inaugurated by IK Muivah in Ukhrul

Ukhrul: IGP I.K. Muivah inaugurated the first of a kind, Hao Cultural Academy at Ura Trust Center Kamphasom, Ukhrul on April 9.

The academy aims to teach and research on Hao performing arts and crafts such as musical instruments, folk songs, folk dance, folklore etc.

The teaching faculty of Hao Cultural Academy are Padma Shree, Guru Rewben Mashangva, awardee for teaching Yangkahui (four hole flute), Guru Rawung for Hao Talu (trumpet), Qr Ningmaso for Hao Tingteila (voilin), Qr Khashim Vashum for Haolàà (folk songs), Qr AS Jonathan for Hao Pheichak (folk dance) and Qr L Changdhar ( Hao Tune and Vocal) managed by Ura Trust.

Speaking at the inaugural function, I.K. Muivah said that out of more than a dozen indigenous musical instruments, Hao music is almost extinct today as many of the aged experts have passed away without transmitting the rich cultural heritage to the younger generation. He said that the folk music and arts should not be identified with only the elderly, but children and youth should learn them.

IGP I.K. Muivah appreciated the initiative of Ura Trust in launching the academy as it will promote positive cultural education in the society. He also urged the academy to work together with zeal and unison, giving an example that even a banyan tree as big as it may, begins from a small seed.
Despite starting small, I.K. Muivah said he believed that the Tangkhul community can envision a big cultural centre with all the facilities to perform and to showcase their culture in future.

President of Ura Trust, Vareishang Phungshok said the academy being the first of its kind, at present lack in setting a strong syllables and courses. In the first intake of students to the academy, around 30-40 students will be seated in each class. He also mentioned the need for modification and up-gradation of the academy in the near future.

The launch programme of the academy was attended by Tangkhul Naga Long vice president, Tagkhul Naga Wungnao Long general secretary, Tangkhul Shanao Long president, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong president, Mapum village headman, chairman of Ato Longphang, CSOs and various other dignitaries.
