Five crorepati in the fray in the ensuing Manipur by-elections

With two candidates having a criminal case against them, another having a PhD in Anthropology, here's a look at the assets and other records submitted by the candidates in their affidavits, according to information available in the website of the chief electoral officer, Manipur.

The ensuing by-elections to four constituencies of Manipur will see five crorepati candidates, among the 11 candidates, compete to represent their respective constituency. With two candidates having a criminal case against them, another having a PhD in Anthropology, here’s a look at the assets and other records submitted by the candidates in their affidavits, according to information available in the website of the chief electoral officer, Manipur.

Wangoi AC

All the three candidates of Wangoi AC are crorepati. Minister O Lukhoi Singh of BJP has declared a total assets (moveable and immovable) of around Rs 2.5 crore. His total income is around Rs 5 lakh for 2019-2020. While, his spouse has a total assets of around Rs 50 lakh and dependents of him have an asset of around Rs 7 lakh. Lukhoi has a pending criminal case against him. His highest educational qualification is High School Leaving Certificate Examination in 1990 from Tombisana High School, Imphal.

INC candidate Salam Joy Singh has declared a total assets of around Rs 4 crore. His total income is around Rs 9 lakh for 2019-2020. His spouse has an asset of Rs 2 lakh and a dependent of him has around Rs 1 lakh as an asset. Joy also has a pending criminal case against him. He graduated from Mayai Lambi college in 1994-1995.

Khuraijam Loken Singh of NPP is the richest candidate in Wangoi AC with a total assets of around Rs 5 crore. His income is around Rs 7 lakh in 2018-2019. His spouse has a moveable assets of around Rs 11 lakh. Loken passed pre university (arts) from Mayai Lambi college in 1989.

Lilong AC

Although independent candidate Mohd Abdul Nasir has declared a total assets of around Rs 30 lakh, his spouse has assets of around Rs 1 crore. His total income was Rs 5 lakh for 2018-2019, while that of his spouse was around Rs 10 lakh for 2018-2019. A dependent on Nashir has a moveable asset of around Rs 23,000. He holds a degree of master of arts from Manipur University in 2002.

Y Antas Khan, another independent candidate has declared a total assets of around Rs 58 lakh, his spouse has assets of around Rs 5 lakh. His income is around Rs 6 lakh for 2020-2021. He passed the XII standard from Ebneger Matrics higher secondary school, Korattur, Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in 2006.

Affidavit of INC candidate Md Azizul Haque Khan was not available on the CEO Manipur website at the time of filing this report.

Wangjing Tentha AC

INC candidate Moirangthem Hemanta is the richest amongst all the candidates of the ensuing by-elections, with a total assets of around Rs 5 crore. While his spouse has an asset of around Rs 25 lakh. The total of Hemanta is around Rs 3 lakh for 2020-2021, and that of his spouse is around Rs 19 lakh for 2019-2020. He completed BSc LLB from Manipur University in 1986.

Paonam Brojen Singh of BJP has declared a total assets of around Rs 1 crore, while his spouse has a total assets of around Rs 1 crore. His total income was around Rs 6 lakh for 2019-2020 and that of his spouse around Rs 4 lakh for 2019-2020. Brojen graduate from Fergusson College, Pune in 1989.

With just Rs 5 lakh of cash in hand, the independent candidate Sarangthem Manaobi is the poorest candidate among all the candidates in the ensuing by-elections. The retired IPS officer has 2 acres of agricultural land, with pension as his source of income. He completed LLM from LMS Law College, Imphal in 2005-2006.

Saitu AC

Ngamthang Haokip of BJP has a total assets of around Rs 23 lakh, while his spouse has around Rs 3 lakh as an asset. His total income is around Rs 3 lakh for 2020-2021. He graduated from Presidency College, Motbung in 1984.

INC candidate Lamtinthang Haokip has declared a total assets of around Rs 8 lakh, while his spouse has around Rs 3 lakh as an asset. He is the most educated candidate among all the other candidates, having a PhD in Anthropology from University of Delhi (2015).

Singhat AC

Ginsuanhau of BJP has been declared as the winner of Singhat AC, uncontested. He declared a total assets of around Rs 1 crore, while his spouse has around Rs 1 crore as an asset. One dependent on him has assets of around Rs 1 crore. His highest educational qualification is Class V, which he passed from Serou Nepali High School in 1974.
