Former MLA/MP B.D. Behring no more

Chandel, June 28: Former MLA and member of the Rajya Sabha B. D. Behring is no more. He passed away on Friday at Gangaram Hospital in Delhi after prolonged illness. He was 74.

A towering Naga leader especially in Chandel district, Late B. D. Behring was first elected as an MLA during the 5th Legislative Assembly election in 1990 from 41-Chandel (ST) AC as a Janata Dal candidate. In March of the same year, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Rajya Sabha but he resigned.

Then, during the 9th State Legislative Assembly held in 2002, he was elected again as a BJP candidate.

Besides the political achievements, he was also the President of Anal Naga Students Union (Anāl Lenruwl Tangpi General Headquarter) from 1977-79; President, Tengnoupal District Students Federation; General Secretary, All Tribal Students Union, Manipur; Councillor, J.N.U. Students Council and President, J.N.U. Tribal Students Union.

“We are deeply heartbroken and we mourned the demise of our Loving and caring father at Sir. Gangaram Hospital, Delhi on 26th June 2025. In this trying time of great sorrow and despair, we thanked everyone who has journeyed with us through the difficult phase. You have not only shared our burden but have also been a source of great strength”, the family members told this correspondent in a message.

According to the message from the family, his final resting place will be his birthplace Thorcham Village, Chakpikarong Sub-Division, Chandel District as per his last wishes.

The lifeless body of Late B.D. Behring arrived in Imphal on Saturday and is kept at his North AOC residence in Imphal. According to sources, he will be taken to his Chandel on Monday where tributes will be paid and then taken to his final resting place.
