International Women’s Day Celebrated in Senapati District Through Sports

SENAPATI: Joining with the rest of the world, Senapati district also celebrated the International Women’s Day under the theme, “Give to Gain” through sports at Astro Turf Ground, Senapati.

The event was graced by Mamoni Doley, IAS, DC, Senapati as the chief guest and Koshia Mao, Public Prosecutor & Govt Advocate, Govt of Manipur as the guest of honour respectively.
W. Paulina Monsang, Deputy Director, Mera Yuva Bharat in her welcome note stated that ASMITA is a flagship initiative of promotional sports for women which is a Khelo India scheme for empowering women through grassroots engagements and structure competitive exposures.

Since it’s inception in 2021, it was stated to have conducted different leagues and engaging more than 2.9 lakhs women athletes in 34 sports disciplines nationwide. The event was stated to be designed in simple scalable and operationally feasible athletes program aligned with Sports Authority of India and My Bharat to maintain sports and fitness at the grassroots level. While the day organised different sports events, the Deputy Director urged all participants to promote physical fitness.

Guest of honour, Koshia Mao, Public Prosecutor, Govt Advocate in her address stated that gone were the days when women were confined in their homes, taking care of their children. In Present days, we witness stronger women proving that they are not behind the male gender in many fields.

The theme “Give to Gain” reminds us that progress and strength is witnessed through sharing and empowering women. Women must uphold self-respect and pursue proper education, noting that the Indian Constitution guarantees rights such as equality before the law, equal employment opportunities, and legal protection. She urged women to be confident, exercise these rights, and move forward with courage.

The guest of honour noted that Senapati has many exemplary women who are heads of administration in different departments, multiple talented women sportspersons are also present, implying that empowerment is not only to women but for everyone in the society.

Mamoni Doley, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, said the event was organised to appreciate and support one another while recognising the importance of women’s role in society every day. She noted that women can excel in every field if given the opportunity, pointing out that the district has yet to elect a woman representative to the legislative assembly.

Encouraging young women, she urged them to stay confident, avoid self-doubt, and not feel inferior when taking up responsibilities. She also emphasised the importance of education and financial independence, urging women to find their own sources of income and move forward with confidence as they represent half of the population.

Different sports like 100 meter race for below 13 age groups, 200 meter race for 13-18 age groups and 400 meter race for 18 and above age groups were taken up.
Later, interesting tug of war was also taken up.
The Indian Red Cross Society, Senapati district was present in the program, looking after the emergency medical services with their ambulance during the program.
