Fresh restrictions have been imposed in Meghalaya in places of worship, functions and gatherings, outdoor sports and cinema halls reducing the number of people from 75 per cent to 50 percent of the total capacity available in such places or sporting events.
Informing this on Tuesday, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that in view of the spike in new COVID positive cases that look very dangerous, the state government has decided to put in place a few more restrictions.
At least 87 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported on Tuesday.
“In places of worship, the number of attendees should come down from 75 per cent to 50 per cent of the seating capacity, and the same is with functions or gatherings be it public or private functions. For outdoor sports and spectators, and cinema halls, the number of spectators should also come down to 50 per cent of the total capacity,” Tynsong said.
He informed that shops, restaurants and bars in Shillong Agglomeration should remain shut by 9 pm every day.
Tynsong appealed to all the citizens of the state to comply with the fresh restrictions and follow the protocols to ensure safety and control the spread of COVID-19.
“I urge all the citizens to cooperate and take care by ourselves for ourselves,” Tynsong said.
The Deputy Chief Minister also urged the people to take precautionary measures and avoid going to crowded places like market places.
Asked if lockdown would be re-imposed of COVID positive cases keep on rising in the days to come, Tynsong said, “The surge in COVID cases is controllable and manageable, but we cannot take chances. But lockdown is the last resort which is why we have issued notification related to fresh restrictions.”
