Ukhrul: Hamai English High School celebrated its Golden Jubilee on October 26 and 27, 2024, commemorating 50 years of providing education in the rural Liangmai area of Manipur. Established in 1975 under the Liangmai Naga Baptist Association, Manipur (LNBA, M), the school has been a beacon of learning in the region, which faces geographical isolation and limited access to development opportunities, a statement from the school said.

The two-day celebration opened with a ceremony on October 26 under the theme “Celebrating in the Praise of God’s Everlasting Love.” The statement highlighted that thousands of students, teachers, alumni, and parents attended the event, with Hon’ble Minister of Water Resources, Relief, and Disaster Management, Govt. of Manipur, Munhu Awangbow Newmai, gracing the occasion as chief guest.

Minister Newmai, who served as headmaster of Hamai English High School for nearly two decades before entering politics, shared a heartfelt address. He reflected on the school’s resilience during challenging periods, particularly during the Naga-Kuki conflict of 1993-94, which he described as one of the most trying times in its history. “Both faculty and students displayed tremendous resilience and character in the face of critical challenges,” he said.

Dr. Hunibou Newmai, the current principal of Hamai English High School, also addressed the gathering. He spoke about the founding mission and vision of the school, emphasizing its commitment to educating students in a region historically lacking in educational facilities. According to the statement, over 1,300 students have successfully passed matriculation exams through the school.

Hundreds of alumni returned to their alma mater to honor the school’s legacy and connect with former classmates and teachers, the statement noted.

The two-day event concluded with a Science Exhibition by students and a series of vibrant cultural performances, including traditional Liangmai songs and dances, the statement added.
