Har Ghar Jal Mission: Akhui Village in Tamenglong Becomes First Village to Implement ‘Drink From Tap Mission’ in Manipur

Ukhrul, August 1: In a bid to provide safe drinking water directly to every household, the District Administration of Tamenglong, in collaboration with the District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM), on Friday officially launched the first-ever “Drink From Tap Mission” at Akhui village. 

Akhui village, renowned as one of the cleanest villages in Tamenglong district and located just 15 kilometers from the district headquarters, becomes the first village in Manipur to implement this innovative pilot project. The village, which is home to 78 households, has ensured that each household is equipped with its own water tap, facilitating direct access to potable water, an official statement stated.

The Har Ghar Jal mission was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Angshim Dangshawa in the presence of key officials, including Chief Executive Officer of ADC Tamenglong Kachamthai F Gangmei, SDO Tamenglong D Meidinbui, ZEO Tamenglong N Abonpou Christopher, PHED EE Salew Lohrii Mao, AE Premson T Panmei, and Chaengdai VA chairman Dimthaorei Panmei. The event also saw the enthusiastic participation of school students and local villagers.

During the launch, the deputy commissioner distributed Water Field Testing Kits to the villagers, empowering them to test their water quality. PHED laboratory chemists provided hands-on training on how to use the kits, and the initial results confirmed that the water quality was within permissible limits and safe for consumption, the statement added.

Following the formal programme, the deputy commissioner and accompanying officials inspected various water taps around the village to ensure proper functionality and quality.

The DC also visited Akhui High School, recognized as one of the top government schools in the district, and inspected the drainage system constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAAGY) as well as the Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centre in Akhui.

The launch of the Drink From Tap Mission is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for the residents of Akhui Village, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across Manipur, it added.
