Agartala: The Member of Parliament from East Tripura Lok Sabha Constituency Kriti Devi Debbarman and TIPRA Motha party founder and royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital New Delhi on Monday, urging him to expedite the passage of the 125th Amendment to the Indian Constitution. The amendment seeks to empower Sixth Schedule areas in Northeast India including the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) with greater legislative and financial autonomy.

The delegation handed over a formal letter to Shah, highlighting the pressing need for the proposed reforms. In the letter, Kriti Devi expressed optimism about the recent assurances made by the Home Minister during a meeting with representatives of Sixth Schedule district councils. She welcomed the decision to form a three-member committee led by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai to address concerns raised by these councils.

“The 125th Amendment, with its provisions as recommended by the Standing Committee, will play a pivotal role in enhancing governance, fostering socio-economic development and preserving the cultural identity of our Sixth Schedule areas. Its passage will demonstrate the central government’s commitment to inclusive and balanced regional development,” the letter stated.
