Inaugural ALT Western Valley Sports Meet Ends Successfully in Chandel

UKHRUL: The first Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (ALT) Western Valley Area Branch Sports Meet 2026 concluded on Thursday at the Beru–Unopat ground in Unopat village under Chandel district, marking a successful debut for the regional sporting event. Thungcheng village emerged as the standout performer, with four of its teams reaching the finals and securing two championship titles.

In the football final, Thungcheng Veteran FC edged past Chandel Christian with a 2–1 victory to lift the championship trophy. Lk Simon of Thungcheng FC was named the best player of the tournament for his outstanding performance.

The volleyball finals also witnessed intense competition. In the women’s category, Thungcheng YC-B defeated Thungcheng Moh Nahla in straight sets to claim the title. In the men’s volleyball final, Beru Unopat YC dominated Thungcheng YC, winning 3–0 to emerge champions.

Cash prizes for the men’s football champions and women’s volleyball champions were donated by Kt Zachariah, while Dr Bd Onahring sponsored the trophy for the football champions.

The inaugural sports meet began on January 15 and saw the participation of 30 teams across football and volleyball disciplines. A total of 20 men’s teams competed in both football and volleyball, while 10 women’s teams contested the volleyball championship.

During the closing ceremony, ALTWVA Branch president Jasha Delecson welcomed the guests and players and emphasized the importance of fair play. He expressed satisfaction over the successful conduct of the first edition of the tournament.

Retired Subedar Major Kl Tangshel, attending as chief guest, lauded the ALTWVA Branch for organising the event, noting that such sporting activities promote both physical and mental well-being. He encouraged athletes to maintain good health and fitness as sportspersons.

Advisor to the ALTWVA Branch, Sr Andria, in his exhortation speech, highlighted the importance of youth, health, and future preparedness, urging young participants to stay healthy and focused on their goals.

The closing programme was also attended by special guest Rd Ngamwar Anal of Khambathel village, an assistant teacher, who presented the best player award in volleyball. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by At Joshua, Sports Secretary of the ALTWVA Branch.
